Blogs complicated?

I'm going to touch on a few applications and concepts to help my friends and family that are just learning blogs get started.  If you need any help, just email me.

Writing Blog Posts
This is my first post using Windows Live Writer, a remote Blogging tool.  Woot!  This should really ease your ability to blog - you just need a blog setup somewhere first.  It's an application that you download and run.  Click Publish, and it's online!

Reading Everyone's Blogs
It's been years - years that I have searched for a lightweight, easy-to-read and manage, RSS reader.  I've tried them all, but nothing was just seamless enough.  Until I played with Vista Beta2, where I got to use the underlying Windows RSS Platform built-into Vista and Internet Explorer 7.  Very nice!  Even better in IE7 RC1 is that has the finalized version of the Windows RSS Platform to allow developers to finally get busy with tools using this platform.

IE7 has a great RSS reader built-in.  And finally, a clean XSL stylesheet applied to the output!  So I now browse my friend's and family RSS Feeds in IE7 at all times, as shown below.

So to my friends and family that are just now learning blogging, this is a great method of staying up-to-date on the blogs (MySpace or alike) you want to read.  Like, uh, mine.  :)  Just look for a button or link that says RSS on the blog you want to sync.  If you need more help, ping me.

This is just too damn easy, sweet, and seamless.  Download IE7 and be done.

Keeping your PC sync'd - NewsGator
Now why would I mention NewsGator with IE7 and RSS when I am talking about using IE7 for all of my RSS reading?  Well, Nick Harris at NewsGator published a nice synchronizing tool to sync the underlying Windows RSS Platform with your NewsGator account.

This is perfect because anything that uses the Windows RSS Platform (i.e. Internet Explorer 7) automatically gets sync'd!

I don't know how many times I've had to setup RSS feeds, re-setup, format a laptop - setup again, format desktop, setup again - over and over.  So troublesome and I know I've forgotten a few I tried to add.

Well, no more!  NewsGator holds all of my RSS Feeds.  And now with the sync tool, I keep my desktop and laptop sync'd.

Now only if someone would take the time and write a sync tool for the RSS Platform for Community Server.  Humm.

Finally.

Reader's Comments

Excellent timing on this post. I just installed Vista a few minutes ago!

Sweet.

Actually, the screenshot above is from my XP machine running IE7 RC1.  But yeah, you get this on Windows Vista as well.

When you install IE7 on an XP machine, it installs the Windows RSS Platform.  I didn't look to see if there was an SDK of the RSS Platform.  But I really like IE7 RC1 (finally fixed the beta issues and the RSS reader within.

See my comment on the Daily news post.

""Eric Duncan writes an introductory post on how to write a blog and how to read and manage your blogs.  Quite an interesting list of friends in Eric's IE7 Sidebar feeds list... "

I actually saw Eric's post the other day, but didn't see that I appear to be the only male and nonmyspacer (he doesn't appear to like my myspace blog) in his list of friends. Should I be worried?"

It's because women are smarter then men.  And that my male friends tend to blog more about CS, Technology, Automotive, and other specific topics (notice my other categories in the picture?) - rather then just general life and rants.

Except the MadBlogger that is, that is now added to my Friends list.  lol
